Intro to Crossing Kansas

This song is called Crossing Kansas
And it’s about the Great Gay Migration
Of the 1960's and 1970's in the United States
Back then you didn’t come out
You got out before you were either beat up or killed
And that meant moving to a city far far away
Somewhere where you’d heard
There was a gay ghetto
Where you could be safe
Where you could be free
Where you could find a new home
And if you made it there
You would be greeted by the phrase
You’re not in Kansas anymore
Which meant you had made it
You had escaped
You were safe
So each year during those decades
Thousands upon thousands of people
Moved from one part of the country to another
Seeking safety
Freedom
And a new home
And in that process
Many of them literally crossed Kansas
Either driving or flying right over it
And this song - Crossing Kansas
Tells the story of one person
Who is about to walk out that door
And take the terrifying leap of faith
To cross over Kansas

Crossing Kansas
09-21-13 - FtLd

Crossing Kansas
I'm crossing off my time
Leaving all my living
I am leaving it behind

Never going back
And I am never gonna try
To find the rhyme or reason
Or understand just why

Everything's a fucking mess
And everyone's a bore
And everything is so screwed up
And I can't take it no more
So don't you look for me on Tuesday
When I told you once before

I'm crossing Kansas
Right out of the door
I’m crossing Kansas
And I won’t be here anymore

Cause everything's ridiculous
And everyone's resigned
Pretending they're oblivious
And acting like they're blind
But don't expect me not to notice
What's right in front of my eyes

So I'm crossing Kansas
Right out of the door
I’m crossing Kansas
And you won't see me anymore

(break)

But if you ever wake up
From that coma that you're in
And you wonder what I'm up to
And exactly where I been
Well I been looking for someone else
Who knows just how to live

So I’m crossing Kansas
I'm crossing off my time
Leaving all my living
I am leaving it behind

Cause everything's a fucking mess
And everyone's a bore
And everything is so screwed up
And I can't take it no more
So don't you look for me on Tuesday
When I told you once before

I'm crossing Kansas
Right out of the door
I’m crossing Kansas
And you won't see me here no more
Anymore
